Background
SeRP offers users a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) experience through the use of the VMWare Horizon solution.
Users are provided access to a Windows or Linux (if appropriate) desktop within a restricted environment. Machines are installed with the latest data science software products and the relevant data assets, to enable data science activity to take place. SeRP restricts users to working with data within the environment and offers an “air lock” mechanism to enable data out of the environment if appropriate.
Local Machine
This requires the user to have a VMWare Horizon client installed on their local machine.
VMWare offer clients for Windows, Mac and Linux and the SeRP team encourages all users to run the latest stable version of the client on their machine.
VMWare Horizon Clients can be found at –
https://my.vmware.com/en/web/vmware/downloads/info/slug/desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_horizon/2006
The client will require relevant administrative access to the directories that the client installs within.
Network Access
Any local firewalls or networking equipment will need to enable TCP and UDP on port 4172 for PCoIP to the following address: offsite.connect.ukserp.ac.uk
This is an important as the client performs a handshake to the connection server and any content filtering solutions will stop the user connecting to the SeRP VDI.
